What Hinduism Is?

I was wondering with the question for quite some time and recent debates about religion with Hinduism in focus is making me write my views about Hinduism. The blog post is being written in a kind of vague and informal way. Hope I will improve it later.

Before moving to Hinduism, we must understand about religion. According to Swami Vivekananda (What Religion Is?), a religion uses to have three components: Philosophy, Mythology and Rituals and one may try to identify a religion having understood these three components. Philosophy part, to me uses to be the core when a religion is born. In any religion other than Hinduism, the philosophy propagates with thoughts of a single God-man/Prophet. All religions have a philosophy which tries to depict the understanding of God. The mythology part progresses gradually and changes significantly over the period of time. So happens with the third component namely rituals and I believe that compared to the philosophy, the other two are more dynamic in nature.

A religion spontaneously gets divided into various sects with time and one may observe a conflict of beliefs among different sects of the same religion. Examples are found in all the religions; Jainism is divided into sects like Digambar and Shwetambar, Islam is divided into Shia and Sunni, Christianity has sects Catholics, Orthodox, Bapists etc., Buddhism is also majorly divided into three sects Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. So, in order to understand a religion, one must not get driven by these conflicts and must not count them as contradiction. Rather, those things must be viewed as a result of some evolution process. 

Hinduism, being one of the oldest religion, has undergone a lot of changes, or if we agree to call it, evolution process. Also, there is a plethora of sects in Hinduism, which obviously have conflicts. Most of the religions which have origin in India had originated as a sect of Hinduism and they evolved as a new religion. Jainism and Sikhism can be counted as examples of this. So the question is, how should Hinduism be understood? I think we can analyze, with some wisdom in hand, the three pillars of a religion. If we look at the philosophy, all sects of Hinduism believe that God is supreme power responsible for creation, functioning and destruction of the world. The God manifests himself in various forms and incarnation. All the living beings are undergoing a cyclic process of birth and death. One who is born must and there is a life after death (जातस्य हि ध्रुवोर्मृत्यु , ध्रुवम् जन्म मृतस्य च -भगवद्गीता ) . Only God can interrupt this process and grant salvation which is assumed to be the state of ultimate pleasure. 

Mythology of Hinduism consists of various Upanishads and Puranas. The mythology across various sects of Hinduism are either derived from these or are modifications/deformations of these. Again, conflicts must not be seen as contradictions.

Giving rituals of Hinduism a definite boundary is a very difficult job. Broadly, worshiping God and idols can be counted as most common rituals Hindus perform. Another characterizing set of rituals are "Samsakara". The sixteen Samskaras may be seen performed in some form or the other, partially or fully performed across a wide range of sects of Hinduism."Antim Samsakara" (the Funeral), as per my knowledge, always involves burning of the dead body with wood except for some saints/sages who go for different kinds of samadhi.

So I conclude here with the understanding that Hinduism can be characterized with the major indicators of the three components Philosophy, Mythology and Rituals which seem to come from a large collection and appear partially in different forms. I think we need this approach to define any religion which has not propagated by a single prophet.

नये घर मे भले जाओ, मगर रिश्ते पुराने हों

तारों जितना तो हम भी चमक लेते हैं मेरे दोस्त,

वो छत पे आयें तो समझोगे कि चाँद किसे कहते हैं.
